Gasoline or diesel: advantages and disadvantages

Gasoline or diesel – this battle of titans is accompanied by many myths. We will help you make the right decision by telling you what the advantages and disadvantages of a particular type of engine. We will also tell you where you can recycle your car not for a penny, but for good money. You can do it here:

Solving the problem of what to choose – diesel or gasoline, it is necessary to consider many conditions. The choice will be influenced by features of operation, the purpose of the car, terrain, even the style of driving and personal preferences. Therefore, it is impossible to find an unambiguous answer to a question which engine is better. We shall try to help in making a decision, having understood what are the differences between diesel and gasoline motors, and also considered their advantages and disadvantages.

The principle of operation of the gasoline and diesel engine

First of all, let’s compare what is the principle of operation of the gasoline and diesel motor. Regardless of the type of fuel used, the operation of motors consists of four actions or strokes. These are the stage of injection into the cylinders, then compression of air or fuel, combustion and exhaust.

The differences lie in the principle of operation. In a gasoline engine, gasoline and air are initially mixed into a single fuel mixture in specific proportions, which enters the intake manifold and pistons. During the compression cycle, the temperature rises and the spark plugs ignite, providing the spark. The resulting energy drives the pistons.

In a diesel engine, only air enters the combustion chamber and is compressed, causing it to heat up to a temperature of 900 degrees. The moment it is heated to its highest point, the diesel is fed, self-ignited by oxygen, releasing the energy that drives the pistons. No spark plugs are used here, the ignition stage is controlled by the fuel injectors and the high-pressure fuel pump.

The final stroke is the same: the exhaust gases are routed to the exhaust system via valves.

Engine comparison

The efficiency of the diesel engine is 20 units, gasoline engine – 10. At the same time, the fuel consumption is less in diesel, and the power is higher in gasoline. If you are used to leisurely driving and do not strive for sudden acceleration, you want to save money, the diesel is your option.

Economy .

Less power means lower consumption in diesel variants. It is also noted that these motors are less subject to wear of parts such as the crankshaft, cylinders, pistons, as diesel acts as a lubricant. It is important to note that the peculiarity is relevant under the condition of using quality fuel. At the same time, gasoline mechanisms are less reverent to low-quality filling.

A few decades ago, a distinctive feature of a diesel engine was the black smoke from the exhaust pipe. Now smoke and soot are a sign of malfunction. Diesel is less toxic and more environmentally friendly.

Servicing a diesel is more expensive, as repair and diagnostic work requires specialized equipment rarely found in car service stations. In addition, there is a shortage of good professionals engaged in the maintenance of diesel engines.

Regular investments are required for the fuel system, which is serviced for oil and filter replacement more often.

Diesel structures are considered to be more durable if quality fuel is used. Poor quality quickly leads to failure of fuel injection pump and other elements, requiring expensive repairs.

Peculiarities of operation in winter

The most discussed point of diesel engine operation. Regular diesel fuel thickens at low temperatures, making starting difficult. Special winter fuel and additives are used. The way out is also the installation of specialized heating systems.

Noise level

Indeed, the high pressure required for combustion of diesel leads to vibrations and noise, increased in comparison with gasoline. The problem is solved by good noise insulation, provided by modern car manufacturers.

Pros and cons

Let us summarize, listing in detail the advantages and disadvantages of each type of mechanism.

Gasoline engine, pros:

The cost of the car is lower.

Simplicity of construction.

Starting at plus and minus temperatures is smooth.

Plenty of technical centers and service specialists.

Availability of spare parts.

Increased fuel consumption.

Reduced torque.

Flammability can cause a car to catch fire.

Compared to the HPF, the ignition system requires more attention and changes more often.

Pros of diesel designs:

Improved efficiency.

Reduced fuel consumption.

Service life is significantly longer with quality fuel.

Expensive to service, it is difficult to find specialists and technical center.

Difficulties in operation in winter time.

Requires original spare parts, which can be difficult and expensive to find.

Thus, each type has a number of advantages and disadvantages, the choice depends on a number of factors, by studying which you can choose the right solution!
