How can I use cruise control to reduce fuel consumption and improve comfort?

Many modern cars are equipped with cruise control. It improves driving comfort, but it is worth knowing how to use it effectively to increase comfort and reduce fuel consumption. It is also worth knowing about the existence of cash for cars scarborough.

Cruise control, once considered a luxury accessory, has become an accessory in many modern cars. For several reasons. With the current level of computerization of vehicles, it is enough to add a button and activate a few lines of code in the vehicle controller.

The role of cruise control is to maintain the speed set by the driver. Active cruise control monitors the distance to the vehicle in front – brakes if necessary. The most advanced cruise control also respects navigation directions and can slow down before approaching speed limits or tight turns.

While we are driving on a flat and empty stretch of road, it is difficult to talk about a strategy for using cruise control. It is enough to set the expected speed and enjoy increased driving comfort or reduced fuel consumption.

The situation changes when the road is hilly or heavy traffic necessitates frequent speed changes. In case of significant changes in the angle of inclination of the road, it is worthwhile to periodically turn off the cruise control and independently control the dynamics of movement. It is more economical to climb a hill with a little throttle before climbing than to keep the gas pedal fully depressed to maintain speed at all costs. Conversely, on long and straight downhills, a gradual increase in speed, that is, inertia of the car, gives better results than engine braking, which only generates energy losses. This is more or less the same principle as the cruise control systems used mainly in trucks, given the topographic maps of the road.

The inclusion of cruise control – also active – does not relieve us of the need to watch the road. Even the most sophisticated device is not able to predict the development of the traffic situation as effectively or monitor it as far away as the human eye. For example, we see a congestion on the road or an expected slowdown – for example, because a truck joins traffic or begins an overtaking maneuver. If we react in advance and turn off the cruise control in time, we don’t even have to touch the brake. If our car has active cruise control with different modes of operation (for example, sports or environmental), it is worth reading the instructions or checking which one works most smoothly. Typically, this is Eco mode, which gently increases speed and then loses it, which helps to reduce fuel consumption. If there is no such function, let’s observe the behavior of our machine. It may be that, in terms of fuel consumption, it is better to gradually increase the set speed. In Russian realities, active cruise control does not always work – low smoothness of movement means that in order to avoid frequent electronic speed changes, it is worth setting the minimum possible distance. It is also worth remembering that holding the gas with active cruise control on counteracts automatic braking – this should be used if, for example, another car overtakes us on the highway and immediately returns to the right lane, that it will increase speed. Also, the automatic speed setting does not always work correctly in accordance with the detected speed limits. It happens that, for example, in the area of highway exits, the car tries to brake from 140 to 70 km / h. If this phenomenon repeats, you can try to counteract the behavior of the cruise control by maintaining the throttle or disabling the “grip” function of the detected speed limit.
