Peculiarities of automatic transmission repair: is it more expensive than mechanics?

Why is repair of automatic transmission more expensive than repair of mechanics? What features of the automatic transmission do not allow you to repair with your own hands and what signs should alert the motorist – we will tell you in detail.

One of the arguments in favor of buying a car with a manual transmission is the high cost and complexity of automatic transmission repair. What are the peculiarities of automatic transmission repair and why is it more expensive than repair of cars with manual transmission? Cars with any gearbox or even without it are accepted here for good money:

Why automatic transmission repair is more complicated

To understand why automatic transmission repair is more difficult, and therefore more expensive, let’s remember what the differences are between these types of mechanisms. In a car, the gearbox acts as a guide, changing the torque and frequency of rotation of the shafts. There are mechanical, automatic, variator and combined gearboxes. Let’s elaborate on the most common first two options.

The manual gearbox is a multistage spur gearbox. The number of stages varies from 4 to 5-6. The torque is transmitted to the undercarriage from the engine by means of toothed gears. The shifting is done manually. Also, transmissions differ in the number of shafts. In front-wheel drive cars, a two-shaft transmission is installed, where one shaft interacts with the engine, the other – with the transmission. The three-shaft transmission can be used in trucks and cars with front- and rear-wheel drive. The clutch pedal is depressed to provide the necessary condition – the input and output shafts must be disconnected to shift speed.

The advantages of the transmission include a fairly light design and relatively inexpensive production. Therefore, the cost of repair is not high, and repair work is less complicated.

The automatic transmission includes a torque converter, planetary reduction gear, hydraulic control system. The torque is transmitted by the torque converter with the help of transmission oil. Gear selection and shifting takes place automatically, without the driver’s involvement. Expensive in this case is associated with the complexity of the design, the difficulty of repair work.

Signs of trouble

Any extraneous noises, unusual smell, slipping when changing gear, jerks when moving, lack of motion should alert you. Distinguish faults in the electronic control system, mechanical and hydraulic systems. Alarming signs:

Wear of the planetary gear is manifested by the appearance of metal chips in the oil.

Strolling, jerks, jerks, vibrations indicate the breakdown of the hydraulic unit. Serious malfunction leads to a complete stop of the car.

Impossibility to shift gears may be a sign of breakage of selector and rocker lever.

Oil leaks indicate worn torque converter friction, and may also require replacement of gaskets, seals, bushings, rings.

The control unit is not selecting the rpm correctly.

The failure of torque converter is signaled by rattling at low rpm, soft sounds similar to the howl of a siren. In addition, the malfunction is indicated by the absence of main pressure and push when shifting gears.

Causes of failure

Among the causes of automatic transmission malfunction is the natural wear and tear of parts. In the electronic system, short circuits or violations of connections, breaks often occur. The friction clutch system is subject to wear of nozzles, seals, friction discs. Also subject to wear elements of the hydroblock and torque converter: glands, bearings, clutch, valves, and so on. All elements of the system are closely connected to each other, so the breakdown of one of them entails the failure of the others.

Improper operation of the vehicle is also related to the reduction of the service life of the gearbox. The risk factors are the untimely change of oil, filters, consumables, the aggressive manner of driving, abrupt starts and braking. The life time will be decreased due to overheating of the gearbox and driving in cold weather. In addition, the cause of failure will be the use of oils, unsuitable for the viscosity level and the installation of spare parts of improper quality, which may occur when the motorist wants to save money.

How are the repairs performed?

Speaking about the causes of failure of the transmission, it is also possible to highlight the repair of the mechanism without proper experience, knowledge and special equipment. To perform automatic transmission repair with your own hands is impossible and will most likely lead to the aggravation of the problem.

Car service center conducts diagnostics, including measuring and evaluating of oil level and condition, checking of engine and electronic system elements. The specialists will read and decode error codes, check static and moving operation, and check the oil pressure.

After that the gearbox is disassembled, its parts are checked and replaced. After that the mechanism is assembled in its place and control diagnostics is performed.
